BU's GSM Department

Welcome back!

This week I think it's important to take a deeper look within our department of Gender Studies.

Bakeless 113B
The director of the Gender Studies Minor (GSM) program, Dr. Christina Francis, can be found in a cozy, corner office inside Bakeless room 113B. Since Fall 2015, Dr. Francis has served as the director of our program. If you wish to learn more about her and the rest of the professors in the GSM department take a look at the Gender Studies Advisory Board.

The GSM program offers any student, from any background the opportunity to explore the contexts in which our identities are created, specifically as impacted by gender and the world's conception of it. If you are at all interested about the construction of identity, the relationships we form and why, or the embedded inequality within our society, you will not only find the GSM courses offered to be interesting but also informative and extremely enlightening.

I've found that classes within the program not only relate to my personal life in ways I never expected, but also in other classes I have taken. Gender Studies forms a basis of understanding and interpreting the ways gender has an impact in our society. The narratives of the discussions I have in GSM classes are often reflected in many of my communication classes, writing classes, and Gen Ed courses. If you notice on the GSM course list you'll find that you can take a GSM class in a variety of disciplines.

It is required to take 18 credits to obtain the little green cord on graduation. Of the courses available, you must take one core course and five elective courses. Of the core courses, you can take: COMMSTUD 309: Gender Issues in Communication, ENGLISH 288: Feminist Reading of Culture, PHIL 408: Feminist Philosophy, and/or POLICI 377: Feminist Political Theory. There are over twenty elective courses one can take through their college career. These classes often overlap with a class you might have already taken, or will take, for your major. In any case, you can find an elective course that is housed under every college from the College of Liberal Arts to the College of Science and Technology.

We'd love to have you join us. Feel free to get in touch with Dr. Francis at cfrancis@bloomu.edu if you have questions.

Until next week,
xo
