BU's No Hate Week

In light of recent events, Bloomsburg University's No Hate Week could not take place at a better time.

While tensions are high on campus, it's pivotal for our campus to remind each of its students of their individual value and uplift them. Just this week, BU held a peaceful protest in response to the hateful video gone viral. The overarching slogan that could be seen on posters or heard throughout the day was "We want D.I.S.," a simple acronym promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Safety.

If you want D.I.S. as well, I encourage you to participate in this year's No Hate Week.

Every day for for the next week, our campus will be conducting events dedicated to uplifting and celebrating the diversity of BU. From November 11th to the 16th, BU's “No Hate Week” Observance will take place with the specific goal to increase overall awareness of the various cultures on campus.

No Hate Week kicks off on Sunday, November 11th, with the Campus Church Visitation “No Hate Sunday,” at 11 a.m. in Kehr. Although held earlier in the morning, there will be a free breakfast served at 10:45 a.m. to fuel your participation as Bethel Deliverance International from Philadelphia and Pastor Martin Harris Sr. from F.O.C.U.S Young Adult Ministry, present.

This Sunday's activities end with a “No Hate March” at 2 p.m. starting on Carver Hall's steps.

That following Monday, at 7 p.m. in Kehr, guest lecturer Odell Bizzell will be presenting a talk titled “Stand Your Ground: How to Become What They Don’t Want You To Become.” As someone who has been featured in USA Today, CNBC, and Yahoo Finance, Bizzell will use his skills as a speaker and national blogger to aid him in delivering a presentation that resonates with his audience.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the “What is Hate Program” panel discussion will take place at 7 p.m. in Kehr multipurpose room 345A. In this same room on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., the “Red Table Program” will openly discuss hate issues with students.

“Coffee Klatch” will take place on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in Kehr room 345B, here students will showcase their poetry on no hate issues.

The Unity Diversity Potluck Dinner will conclude BU's No Hate Week on Friday, Nov. 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Kehr, Hideaway Room 231. Drinks, dessert, and bread items will be provided. To sign up, go to Kehr, room 230! The last day to RSVP is Thursday, Nov. 15.

It's so important to remind ourselves that you are valued and deserve respect. That to be judged or mocked because of your skin color, culture, sexual orientation, or gender identity, is ridiculous. It's almost 2020; it's time we start envisioning an inclusive society that empowers every one of its people.

Again, if you are interested in making your campus Diverse, Inclusive, and Safe for yourself and your peers, check out any of these events offered this upcoming week!
